Medicine Cabinets

Many people don’t think much about their medicine cabinets until they discover the current one no longer meets their needs. Perhaps its not big enough, needs repair, or they’re redoing the bathroom and the style of the cabinet is long past its fashionable age. If you household finds itself in any of these three categories step one is understanding the two types of cabinets currently on the market.

The first cabinet mounts to the surface of the wall. This is very easy to install so long as you have good studs in the wall on which to mount it. The down side of a wall mount is that it extends into the bathroom space (so you want to place it where people won’t catch an arm or head on the corner or edge).

The second cabinet is recessed, meaning it goes into the wall. You’ll need enough room between walls for the depth of the cabinet. This mounting on this cabinet is more difficult because you also have to watch for wires, pipes, and ducts in the intended space. However, it saves precious room space and offers a less imposing front.

Once you choose between these two, you still have lots of options. The frameless cabinet has a very tidy feel, while framed ones can be far more formal. Both frameless and framed cabinets offer a variety of features ranging from a mirrored front to exterior and interior lighting. An interior light is ideal for darker bathrooms so that no mistakes get made when reaching for medication.

This brings up an important point — no matter the style safety and functionality are the two most important aspects of your medicine cabinet. If you have young children, you might want one that offers safety locks, for example. Or, if you use the cabinet for a variety of bathroom necessities you’ll probably want one that’s deeper or longer than the average size. A good way to figure out size is to take a random variety of items that “live” in your bathroom cabinets and set them out in front of you. Now try to squeeze them together into a small space, but so everything is still totally identifiable. You’ll want a cabinet that’s a little larger than that space.
