‘Neither of us were keen on the idea of a feminine bedroom, so we’re very happy with the way the more masculine, African-inspired look turned out’
of a colourful pink teamed with a soft sage and blue on the woodwork is both uplifting and unusual. ‘It’s like diving into a box of wrapped chocolates!’ she says enthusiastically.
When it came to the living room, that’s when the fun really began. ‘We are both inspired by the writings of Somerset Maugham and Graham Greene, who wrote of far-flung, exotic places.

We wanted the room to have that kind of feel to it.* Sarah chose Autumn Falls by Dulux lor the walls, and offset it with antique furniture from the Far East, teamed with a modern Peter Gill sofa. This room is also home to one of the couple’s favourite finds: a pair of doors from the 1920s. ‘I came across them in Pakistan about four years ago,’ says James. They’re quite narrow, which is odd for this type of door, as they’re usually six-feet wide. They fit just perfectly in here.’
The doors lead into the bathroom, where the exotic flavour is continued. James had long cherished an ambition to have a Moroccan-style bathroom and at last he was able to fulfil it. The doors inspired the choice of colours that are painted on the faux mosaic surrounding a wooden cabinet from Pakistan. A combination of blue, yellow and green wall colours complement the tiles on the side of the bath.
In the attic bedroom, the couple could immediately see how the room would lend itself to an African-safari scenario, complete with a canopied-tent effect. With leather trunks from Tibet and an original wooden chest, this is considered a bit of a boy’s room. ‘Neither of us were keen on having anything too feminine, so we’re happy with the way it’s turned out,’ says James.
It’s amazing what the couple have achieved in what is just a one-bedroom flat - the overall effect is truly unique, and precisely what Sarah had in mind, i was determined our home should be something fantastic. We’ve created a look that is very much part of us. In every sense this is far more than just a flat above our shop… it’s a reflection of our personalities and the many varied experiences we’ve shared.’
ABOVE Sarah originally chose a bright pink shade for the walls in the small study area. ‘I thought it would look quite funky, but it just looked wrong and had to be repainted,’ she says.
LEFT The exterior of the couple’s charming Devonshire property is characterised by the same diverse mix of furniture and finds as their shop and flat.
