Book shelves (Units)

The two things that concern most consumers when they’re shopping for a bookshelf are the price and the way the shelving unit looks. Having said that, there are other important factors to remember when shopping for a shelving unit. Here are a few:

- Function: if it’s for a small collection of books you won’t need anything overly fancy. If it’s for a large collection of books or for collectibles you may need heavier units and even lighting.

- Space constraints: where is this going? The floor where you place a shelving unit needs to be flat, and in some cases shelving units need to be attached to a wall to support extra weight.
- Does the unit offer adjustable footing (this helps if you’re dealing with a leveling problem)
- Buy big: It?s inevitable that most bookshelves will quickly find their open spaces shrinking. Buy larger than you think you need for now, looking to the future.
- Structure. In any unit short, thick shelves are sturdier than longer ones. The longest a 1ft wooden shelf should be is 1 yard otherwise it looses integrity. Additionally how much room is there between shelves? Don’t forget your oversized items!
- Materials: metal is ok for a garage unit, but in the living room it looks a little awkward. You want shelving that meshes with your lifestyle and other furniture.

- Freestanding: A freestanding unit doesn’t require attachment to a stud in the wall. This means its like other furniture in your home in terms of floor space. However, the good news is that you can move it when you wish without patching the wall!
- Wall mounted: these will have limits as to how much weight they can take without pulling out.

Finally, if you’re not handy and you’ve bought a system that requires assembly, consider paying the fee for delivery and installation. This helps protect your warrantee and saves a lot of headaches
