Buying Bunk Beds

Bunk beds come under “furniture” in terms of purchasing, meaning a good set won’t be cheap, and it’s going to take some thought to determine what you’ll need. Bunk beds are great pace savers and a viable solution for a fast growing family. Because children are most often the residents in these beds, if they’re old enough it’s recommended you get them involved in the shopping process so both you and they are content with the results. Note that for safety reasons children under 6 shouldn’t sleep in a top bunk.

Ok, step one – how much space do you have? Take a measurement from floor to ceiling. You want to buy a set that will leave at least two feet between the top bunk and the ceiling so people don’t keep hitting their head. Additionally measure the length of space you have to utilize. Some styles, like bunks with desks, require more real estate in the bedroom than others.

You may not know this, but there are more than one type of bunk bed. The basic design is where two of the same sized beds are stacked straight on top of each other. A loft bed is similar but it offers more flexibility by having open space into which desks or shelves can go. A fouton bunk has a bed over a fouton to create a living/sleeping combination ideal for a guest room. And a pull out bunk stows one of the two beds away under the top bed to open up floor space when the bed isn’t in use.

If that weren’t enough then there’s features and styles. More bunk beds are featuring shelves and drawers so they provide storage space that doesn’t creep out into the room with another piece of furniture. Some have lights built in the headboards for those avid night time readers. And other pieces have “add ons” that you can buy later (such as an attachable desk or dresser, a slide, and even tents).

One word of wisdom: think long term. If you know your child will be tall, or you’re planning to use the beds for guests don’t get single bunk beds – look at twins and full sizes so the beds will grow with the children or adjust easily to and adult sleeper.
