Ceiling Fans

When it’s hot and humid and central air conditioning is right out of the budget, a ceiling fan becomes an attractive alternative that meets both the financial and physical needs. However, wanting a ceiling fan and picking one out are two different things. Suddenly you’re confronted with options in  ceiling fans style, brands, motors, blades, and more! So where do you start when its time to go and purchase your ceiling fan?

Step one is understanding that  ceiling fans don’t simply  cool a room, they simply improve circulation making you feel as if you’re cooler. And, in fact, the air’s movement can decrease your body temperature in conjunction with perspiration. So, air movement is the key to a fan functioning as it should. The motor has a role to play in this – it powers the movement. Don’t get a motor that’s noisy or lacks a good body. In the first instance you’ll be awake from the noise instead of heat. In the second, you’ll end up replacing the fan much sooner than you’d like.

Another factor in the air movement is the blade. Experts tell us that air moves more effectively if the blade’s connected at a 14 degree pitch. Additionally the blades should be balanced or it will cause the whole fan to vibrate noisily. While you’re examining the blades, look at the fan’s size. Unless your room is over 12’ square, you won’t need a fan that’s over 50” in size. A 10 x 10 room needs only 42”, for example. So know the room’s dimensions when you shop and also how high the ceilings set. Lower ceilings require tight mounts so the fan doesn’t hang so low as to hit people in the head! Plus, a fan that’s about 8-9 feet off the floor does a good job circulating air properly.

By the way, fans aren’t just useful in summer. If you buy one with a reverse function it can push down the warm air that would normally rise out of your ceiling. In this manner, your ceiling fan becomes more energy efficient for the whole house.
