Choosing Quality Bed Pillows
Among the many choices when putting a bedroom together, a pillow is at the top of the list in terms of individual choice. Let’s take a look at some of the options you have out there:
Hypodown is non-alergenic and comes in various degrees of firmness. It can scrunch up when you sleep, and offers various fills from 600-800 so try them! These pillows are on the expensive end of the scale. Slightly less costly but nearly as nice are latex.
A third option is Alpaca, which isn’t itchy like wool and they’re very durable. Wool is similarly long-lasting and offers firmness. By comparison silk is much softer but doesn’t usually keep its fluff for a very long time. A better option is cotton because it wears well and still offers softness on the skin.

Bed pillows are made of many materials
Something rather new on the market is a material called Lyocell. This is a great organic offering that?s very soft. It?s comparable to down in texture but regulates heat. Down pillows offer support and cushioning, but you should always try them to see if the firmness is suited to your sleeping style. For example, if you sleep on your stomach you don?t want an overly firm pillow.
Medium firmness is good for people who sleep on their backs and firm pillows are good for sleeping on your side. To know how firm a down pillow might be look at the fill. A 750 fill will be firmer than 650. This is true of other pillows too, the higher the fill number the firmer the pillow.
Overall down is an expensive choice but it’s fluffier than the less expensive polyester alternative. No matter the fill, you want to check the seams for a tight fit so bits of the filling don’t eeek out. If you have any allergies watch for hypo-allergenic fills, and if you have neck or back problems you may want to consider a memory foam pillow.
No matter the pillow remember that all pillows compress a bit with use so you might want to buy one that’s slightly firmer than you like and break it in.
