Clock Radios

At first people might think that choosing a good clock radio isn’t rocket science, but with technology growing daily you might be surprised at the features and costs associated with this once simple gadget.
People depend on a clock radio to keep them on time and in many cases also trust radio to provide information when other sources like cable might be “out”.

That means at least one good feature to get in your clock radio is a battery back-up. This way when power goes out, you still get up!
Speaking of which, the alarm features are at the top of the list of what most people try first. Sound sleepers may want a system that gets louder each time you hit the snooze dial. These aren’t overly abundant on the market, but worth the money if you’re not one to rise and shine on those first two nudges. An alternative to the increasing volume feature is a back up alarm. This is a time that you set in advance in case the first alarm doesn’t’ wake you. The alarm is independent of the first, so it won’t be affected if you turn off the initial chime.

The third feature to look at literally is the display. You want to be able to read the time easily from bed so stand about that far away from the clock radio when you’re considering purchasing it. If the display has a dimmer switch, all the better. While a little light is nice, you don’t necessarily want to be able to read by it.

Now we get into the optionals – do you want a CD player? Stereo speakers? Tape player? Ipod docking bay? Believe me when I say there are some clocks that are nearly as complex as a complete stereo system, which might be a tad much especially in the middle of the night when you can’t find the right button.
Finally there are niche clocks – like ones you have to throw to turn off, or ones that you can program with different wake up calls. There’s a certain satisfaction in the former design, almost like “getting even” especially if the clock has an annoying siren. The key ultimately is does the clock get the job done. If you’re snoozing right now, you bought the wrong clock.
