Area Rug

Area rugs bring color and patterns into a room, and they have a lot of benefits. Your floors will be warmer on bare feet, the rugs can go over high-traffic areas to protect wood or carpeting, and they can bring a dash or whatever style you want to any room.

How do you know how to pick the right rug? Well start by asking yourself its function. If you’re using it to protect an area from dampness or dirt, you want a rug that’s washable using common machines and won?t require a professional service. Note that highly patterned rugs don?t show dirt as quickly.

In terms of size 4×6 and 6×9 are the most common depending on where its going. If under a coffee table, for example, all four legs should be ON the rug. Similarly in a dining room the chairs should never be on the underlying carpet or bare floor.

While you look around, keep your eyes open for a good rug pad too. This keeps your rug from shifting and it also extends the life expectancy of your rug. A third benefit is that it?s a noise reducer!

Like your furniture rugs have different fibers each of which has advantages and disadvantages to ponder. Acrylic won?t fade in sunlight, Olefin is highly stain resistant, nylon wears very well, wool is soft to the touch and cleans well, cotton is also soft but won’t last as long as wool, and of course blends mix the characteristics of the fibers used.

Finally, a term to watch for when shopping is line count. Think of this like the counts in linen. It tells you how man knots/stitches exist in a square inch of rug. This is different than needle count, which measures loops (the higher the number, the denser the rug). In both cases, the higher the numbers the more durable your rug will be.
