Home Intercom Systems
Our homes are slowly being filled with more and more wireless systems. There’s a huge advantage to that – from a safety stand point, there aren’t loose wires all over the house. However, an average shopper finds themselves overwhelmed with jargon and options when shopping for such items, an intercom being no exception to the rule.
First, depending on where you live the frequency range for intercoms will vary. Initially all systems were on 49MZ, but that’s gone by the wayside because there were no security features. Anyone on the same frequency could listen to what was being said. So, modern systems have switched to digital transmission over various frequencies to improve privacy. With this in mind, it’s probably best to get a new intercom system as opposed to one that’s been used.

Home intercom systems can make life much more convenient
Second, think about how many rooms really need an intercom. For example, if the kitchen is next to the living room, they probably don’t both need an intercom. However having one station in the kitchen and one in the cellar makes sense. Make sure to shop for systems that have enough linking stations for the spots you’ve designated for your intercom.
Third, while shopping be wary of the word “wireless.” Some systems aren’t wireless at all. They use an adapter and plug into your electrical system. Additionally, this type of intercom seems to transmit poorly, so while their easy on your budget, you probably won’t be happy with the results. On the other hand, a hardwired system also goes into the electrical system, but gets much better results. The problem with hardwiring is that it might require some re-routing of lines, which gets expensive.

Fourth, if you know that you want one intercom outside your home, you’ll want to watch for a waterproof system. Now, don’t worry – this doesn’t mean you have to pay extra for everything to be waterproof. Rather look for a system that offers a variety of intercoms suited to different spaces in your home, but the all work together (akin to wireless telephones with more than one handset). Speaking of outside, do you want to be able to see who you’re talking to? Some intercom systems offer this capacity, which is a great security feature if located at your front door!
Finally, realize that a wireless home system is intended just for the home. You’re usually not going to be able to go around the block and still connect by a hand held com. If you need a feature like that, look into radios instead.
