A New Plasma TV

Plasma Televisions represent one of the most expensive options in television buying. Similar to buying any other big screen TV, the keynote in shopping for this TV is finding a balance between size and features, and the bottom line price. Any TV over 50” (especially if it comes in High Definition) is going to be expensive, so you’ll want to get as close to your dream system as possible within your budget.

Start by making a wish list. How large a screen would you prefer? How do you want it to connect to your cable, satellite and other entertainment systems? How should it look?
Do you want to hang it on a wall? Answering these questions provides you with a baseline. Shoot for the whole shebang first and see if there’s a TV that matches your wish list in size and features. How much does it cost? If it’s in your budget, really all that’s left to consider is the manufacturer’s reputation, the warranty and how good an image the TV produces (it doesn’t make sense to buy a big TV that has lousy resolution).

Having said that, don’t go so big that the TV seems to overwhelm your living space. If you have a small family room or living room, 42” models are becoming less expensive and work fine in a 20 x 20 space. In fact, larger TVs when viewed too closely loose some definition, so size really is a factor that’s well considered. For example, if you buy a 50” Plasma TV, you will need 100-150” between the TV and the viewing area for good images. Speaking of which, the TV’s resolution is another big factor. If your TV supports High Definition The higher the pixelation per line, the better your picture quality becomes. On the 50” display you want a resolution of at least 1366 X 786

Finally we get into connections. You will be wanting to “plug and play” a variety of entertainment systems into your TV so look for a model that has all the ports you need including a USB if you’d like to be able to use the TV as an alternative computer monitor (a great option for people with poor eyesight). Try to think ahead here. If you know you’ll be buying more entertainment systems in the future, then buy a model that will support those inputs with as little fuss and adapters as possible.
