Buying a Computer Desk

Having a home computer is becoming commonplace even for people who do not have home offices. In response to this manufacturers have created a variety of computer desks suited to the way a computer is used in a home. For example, a computer used predominantly for gaming might have built in shelving for a game system and shelving for various games. The beauty here is of course having a functional space that’s also safe and secure for your computer.

Having said all that, this means your first chore is asking yourself exactly what you want in a computer desk. Do you want a hutch with a sliding work area that can be tucked away when not in use? This is especially nice in homes where computer and tv time get limited by mom and dad. Or, perhaps you want a nice roll top desk that’s been adapted for a keyboard but looks great as a piece of furniture. In a house with hardwood floors these look stunning. Then again, do you want/need a desk with lots of organizational options (drawers, dividers, shelves)? For families short on floor space, you want to get the most flexibility for your spending dollar.

The materials in computer desks run the full spectrum from metal and wood to glass. Glass looks great in a contemporary setting, but it’s a bear to keep clean. Metal has a distinctive “futuristic” feel, but some designs smack of institutions. Wood is warm and long lasting. Pressboard is very reasonably priced especially for children’s units, but may not provide enough longevity (and may warp).

What’s most important here is that a computer desk makes it easier and comfortable for the tasks at hand. Things like an adjustable monitor stand, printer or computer shelves, keyboard drawers, easily reached shelves or file space aren’t simply conveniences – they can reduce eye and back strain! So make sure you sit down at potential desks and see how they feel in terms of reach and visual ease before you buy.
