Very often when it comes time to replace or purchase a hot water heater, there are many people who have no idea how to size one up to make sure its what they want and will be efficient for their home use, supplying all the hot water they are going to need.

One of the issues is that due to advertising by hot water tank makers, we tend to think of one brand or type as being far better than another , when in reality, all the manufacturers use largely the same process in making them, so you have an equal chance of getting a very good, or a mediocre tank from any one of those hot water tank manufacturers.

You will also find that although tankless heaters are touted as being far more energy efficient, in some cases they are not, particularly if you set up the energy efficient model of tank heater, they will at times meet or best the tankless model.

Whats really necessary and in the best interests of the home owner who is purchasing a new hot water tank, is to purchase one with a certain configuration, and then to purchase parts that are both simple to install and will give a superior product an even better performance.

There are several things which will bear on what is the right water heater for your family.
In the first place the number of people in your home, using the hot water heater will make a great difference. Obviously a couple doesn’t require the same amount of water heated in the home as a family of six. This makes a huge difference in the water heater output that you’re going to need.

The second issue will be how rapidly the tank will heat a given amount of water, as well as how long it will last and the efficiency with which it heats the water. Namely the cost to operate the hot water tank on a given months electric or gas fuel bill.
If you were to purchase a hot water heater with a superior energy rating, the monthly expenditure for its operation will of course be far less than one which is not energy star rated.

Make sure that you check the insulation value, to know how long the water will remain hot, and hence keep the hot water heater from kicking on quite so often and charging up the electric or gas bill.

In addition to the energy efficiency rating you will also want to assure that you purchase one which has a good warranty, although don’t be entirely guided by this.. the purchase of a ten year warranty and a 5 year warranty very often adds up to nothing more than a larger diameter anode, and may cost quite a bit more for that small difference.
