Installing Safety Latches

Safety latches are not simply for homes with children. They’re excellent deterrents to curious pets too! This allows a person to keep potentially hazardous or highly breakable items safe behind a door that can’t be opened easily by the child or pet, but can be accessed by a responsible adult.

As you’re shopping you’ll notice latches come in plastic and metal. Both types are viable. But when you buy, don’t just cover your lower cabinets. When a baby learns to climb, those upper doors become fair game! We also had a cat that could climb cupboard shelves. You can also find latches for drawers, like those where you store sharp implements.

Some safety latches come with keys, which make for great security but becomes a problem if you loose the key! The more popular style is a two piece latch where one side grabs the other and releasing the latch requires pushing down while also pulling the door open. Before buying either style, make sure you’ve looked at your drawers, cabinets and countertops to see how they’re set. Not all conform nicely to a hidden safety latch (frameless cabinets are one example). You may have to consider an exterior design instead.
