Portable Fans

Not all homes or apartments require full air conditioning units to keep air circulating and cool. In fact, in some instances having a full system would be over kill. That’s where a portable fan becomes a great and very affordable solution. It allows you to cool a small space, or if you buy several a whole house.

Some people wonder if fans are energetically effective. If you were to run an average window fan all day long for a month, it would cost about 14.00. That’s far less than air conditioning any day! So you’re saving money on both the product and energy with this particular choice.

There are several types of portable fans on the market including:

-         Personal fan with blades up to 7” - this small and very portable, perfect for kitchen or bathroom countertops.

-         Pedestal fans – These have moving tops to cover more area, and most offer adjustable height. The fan blades measure 12-19” making this a good choice for  one whole room instead of one segment like the personal fan.

-         High velocity fan – these are meant for large areas, and are often seen in commercial settings

-         Barrel fan: This style can keep dust or fumes out of a workroom

-         Window fan/box fan - saves floor space and except for inexpensive models often offer reversal so you can pull in fresh air or push out hot, damp air.

In choosing your fan, no matter what you want to listen to it before you walk out of the store. If the fan seems noisy or as if the blades aren’t evenly weighted it’s not going to do a good job and may break down quickly. Also look for a fan that offers a nice length of cord. This gives you a lot more flexibility as to where you can put it easily without having to by an extension cord.

If you’re looking for whole house cooling with fans, buy ones suited to the upper level of your home, leaving windows open on the lower floor. This provides the best circulation. Most times you will need several fans, one per room to get the right effect.
