Spring time is here and spring cleaning is a necessity for nearly any home.
After being closed up for a major portion of the long cold winter, its time to open it up, air it out and clean it ..
Most of the cleaning projects are self explanatory but a couple of them raise questions.

With a bit of care your blinds can stay clean and fresh for a long time to come

Window blinds for one, are not always easy to clean and sometimes require a bit of consideration as to the best way to accomplish it, without injuring the blinds or yourself into the bargain.
Its easy to accomplish this and to keep your blinds looking like new if you tackle it the right way round.
No cleaning job is fun, granted, but replacing blinds and shades is even less fun and oh so costly if you have to do so.

Venetian blinds, vertical blinds, cellular shades are all able to be cleaned using the right techniques so give it a shot and see if its not far easier to simply clean them, than to replace them yearly.

If your blinds are of wood products, they can be cleaned using the brush attachmenbt of your vacuum, which will render them lint and dirt free, then wiped with a damp cloth, using a mild detergent.

Using your brush attachment will loosen soil that may be embedded in the fabric and make it easier to clean, using that same sponge and  mild soap solution

Blinds which are more severely soiled can be cleaned using a damp cloth and some laundry detergent, which has been diluted using the manufacturers directions.

Never use abrasive cleaners such as a powdered scrub cleanser. This will damage both wood and vinyl blinds, and render them dull in appearance.

If the wood blind is severely stained, treat it with beeswax or a wood restorer.. Often we hear that we should use lemon oil however the truth is that lemon oil is a drying oil and should not be used frequently on wood.
Do not ever use an abrasive cleaner on your painted wood blinds. Severely stained blinds must be treated with lemon oil or a wood restorative.
On a cellular shade, clean with a feather duster or charge the duster from your vacuum and vacuum them frequently as they need more frequent cleaning then vinyl or wood blinds to keep them working well.

Never crease the fabric of your cellular blind, take great care when vacuuming it so that there are not permanent creases or damage to the blind.

If cellular blinds are showing surface dirt, clean them with a very mild soap diluted with water.. harsh detergents or bleach are absolute no nos with cellular blinds.
