Stereo Systems

In shopping for a stereo system, the first question to ask yourself is: location, location, location! Most stereo systems are purchased for a central zone in the home, and a spot where wires can be easily run and connected from piece to piece. Once you make that choice, now you can let your imagination run wild for a bit. Think of every woofer, tweeter, and technological bits and bobs that you’d most like on your system.

Write those down in order of preference. This way you can look for a system that offers most of your preferences within your budget. Effectively you’re about to become your own DJ so shop accordingly.

If you haven’t shopped for a system in some years, be aware that a system’s speaker quality is no longer a function of size. You’re going to want to listen to the same piece of music on several speakers that are sized right for your home to make an informed choice. If you intend to do surround sound, make sure you try the speakers in a similar configuration at the store before buying.

While price and quality are always on shoppers minds, you have so many options for your system today that you may find it dizzying. However, a lot of TV’s, DVD’s, MP3s, etc. now tie into stereos, as do game systems. That means you may be able to get rid of some of your older speakers and use only one system through which all sound gets channeled.

Another consideration is how flexible your system is – can you add on to it easily in the years ahead or will it become outdated quickly? Having said that is it more complex than necessary to your listening habits and household? The old joke about stereo instructions was based on a lot of truth! Also, what’s the wattage like? You don’t want to be running a 500 watt system in a one room flat, for example, (unless you don’t mind noise complaints).

Finally take the time to read consumer reviews on the systems you favor. These are invaluable for discovering power, connectivity and warrantee issues.
