Bean Bag, or Poof Chairs

These two types of chairs are very similar in appearance but are constructed a little differently. The “poof” chair contains polyurethane foam that’s shredded into small pieces so that the filling moves around and molds to whomever sits in the chair. This, in turn, makes the chair squishier than a traditional bean chair. The exterior of the poof chair comes in various materials, but most have stain-resistant features and double stitching to make sure the filling stays neatly within. Cost wise, the “poof” chairs start just under 100 but can go up to 300.

The poof chairs are incredibly comfy. As you might expect, they conform easily to every curve of the body with no corners or odd angles. This makes them very nice for people experiencing joint aches. The only downside is getting into the chair and back out again from floor level. That limitation doesn’t make this style chair a good choice for the elderly.

By comparison a bean chair has PCV or foam beads. This style chair began showing up on the market in 1969, created by an Italian designer who wanted lightweight movable furniture. They were originally called Saccos, and were constructed of leather exterior and styrofoam beads. The use of beads hasn’t changed, but this also causes most bean chairs to begin compressing after about two years. Thankfully some companies design the chair so you can zip it open and add more filling as desired (people with back problems might want to over-stuff their bean chair from the get-go). Zipping brings up an important point – be it a “poof” or a bean chair, get one where the outer fabric can be removed for washing, and make sure the fabric isn’t “dry clean only”. Since children and pets LOVE these chairs, you won’t be sorry you looked for that feature.

Like the “poof” chair, bean bag chairs range in size so that they can fit specific people. You can literally find ones small enough for a cat, or large enough to hold a couple who want to curl up in comfort. You have a huge choice of fabric including vinyl and denim! Personally, I prefer a fabric chair so skin doesn’t stick to the surface in warm weather.  Price wise they’re totally comparable to the “poof” style.
