Bird Feeder Yard Accents

Bird feeders are a lovely accent to your yard that brings a little bit of outdoors closer to your windows and porch. Before you shop, however, you want to have a feel for what kinds of birds live in your area, and of those what you want to attract. There are a lot of websites that can help you with this step, but you need to know this as bird feeders are designed to appeal to specific species.

Birds can be finicky. They have ways of eating and interacting that determine what type of feeder they’ll frequent. A cling feeder, for example, attracts birds like woodpeckers and chickadees. Here they grab a bit of lunch easily off a suet ball covered with seed. Platform feeders, by comparison, offer a level space on which the birds can sit. Sparrows love this set up, especially if you keep it filled with sunflower seeds. Cardinals and mourning doves will also appreciate this type of feeder.

Perch feeders are similar to a platform system except it gives more birds access to the food. Here there are perches on all sides, up and down, the feeder with individual openings from which to eat. Birds seem to appreciate having more personal space, and often eat without noticing other snackers.

Once you’re decided on the basic construction now you can look at details of the feeder’s features. You definitely want a feeder that deters other yard predators somehow (like sneaky squirrels). You also want a feeder that can be taken apart easily for cleaning so that the birds who visit don’t grow ill from molds and mildew. Finally, buy a feeder that’s weather resistant so it lasts for several seasons.
