Hammocks

What would the lazy days of summer be without the comfort of a hammock? But shopping for one isn’t necessarily an easy task. You want to stop and consider where you want to put the hammock, where it will be stored in off seasons, what your lifestyle is like, and what you really want in features. Don’t just go for something pretty – you want functionality too!

As you’re looking at locations, do you plan to have a stationary hammock or do you want one that offers the ability to move it from place to place? In the latter instance, you can get a metal hammock frame complete with wheels for about 100! This really extends the usefulness of your hammock and doesn’t require having trees in the perfect places on your lawn (or sinking a pole on which to mount hooks).

Also think about who will use the hammock and how many people at a time will likely use it? You want something durable, strong, and a hammock that those individuals can get into and out of with the least amount of assistance.

For many people budget will play a factor. I always recommend getting the best quality possible on the budget you have. Basically you’ll be choosing between rope and fabric hammocks, the rope style being rather classic. Most rope systems need 13-16 feet of space to hang off the ground. The smaller the spacing between the ropes in this type of hammock, the more comfort they offer. This version is very strong, being able to handle over 400 pounds of people provided it’s set up properly.

Fabric hammocks are low maintenance and won’t catch your feet like a rope style will. They’re a little sturdier, and many of them are washable. Cotton will typically offer a cozy seat, but remember that any cloth hammock won’t breath like a rope one and may be a little uncomfortable on humid days. By comparison polyester is more durable, but not as comfortable.
