Setting Stone Fencing
Building with rock or stone is not nearly as hard as people think it is. There are several varieties of stone, such as creek stone, limestone, or even what is known as thin stack.

Before you begin you will want to determine your property boundaries, determine what kinds of legislation or zoning set backs are necessary in your area and then to mark out each of the underground utilities since you will be working near them, or digging in the vicinity.

In most cases the finding of the utilities is a free service of your local utility company and will save vast headaches and money in the overall scheme of things. To get started, you’re going to want to measure back from your property line and then set a line there so that you know you are working in a legal way.
Put a single stone where you have decided to put each upright column of either wood or stone stack and then dig footers. These will need to be about 4 to 6 inches deep.
Digging the post holes is next and can be done with a post hole digger, or just a shovel.
These will need to be about a quarter the length of the post you’re going to be using.
Mix the mortar and spread a bed of mortar on top of the footer about 2″ thick.
You are ready then to begin to lay your fencing or to begin making the stone posts if you have decided to include those.
