Buying a Toaster

Toasters have been around since the turn of the century, but certainly weren’t anything like the technological gadgets we enjoy today. Consumer demands have resulted in a variety of toaster models to suit a wide variety of tastes and styles. So, as with toaster ovens, typically what “sells” a machine are its features.

Step one: Slots – how many people eat toast or pastries in your home regularly? You want enough open slots so everyone can eat at once should the occasion call for it. And while you’re counting look at how wide the slots are – will they accommodate bagels, for example, which are wider than a slice of bread. Are the slots long enough for artisan style breads too?

Next – look at the shade selector. Some high end toasters offer digital and programmable shades instead of the traditional dial. Personally I think this is going a tad far, but if you’re looking for perfect toast every time it may be right for you.

A third and fourth feature that are rather new to toasters is the ability to thaw bread and viewing areas. The thawing feature is great for parents on the go who might forget to take out a loaf the night before. The viewing window allows you to peek at the items progress and make sure you’ve set the shade index correctly.

If those weren’t enough here are some more options available on modern toasters:

Cool-touch surface: This keeps the outside of the toaster safe to touch – a great feature for households with children.

Cancel button: Will stop the toasting cycle right away if you realize something is wrong.

Crumb Trays: If your toaster offers one, make sure it’s easily removed and cleaned. Dish washer safe is wonderful!

As with so many other kitchen accessories, you always have to bear in mind how much counter space you’ve got, and the basic style or theme in your kitchen. There are enough toasters available – from retro to ultra space age — to suit nearly every taste and need
