Buying Kitchen Canisters

Canisters represent another question mark in the minds of space-aware consumers. There are dozens of types suited for everything from flour and sugar to coffee and cereal. Then of course there’s the question of style – do you want glass, ceramic, metal, square, round, stackable, traditional or modern, or even ones with themes.

They will run in price anywhere from 5 dollars USD, for one canister, up to as much as 50, if you select some top range materials and brands. Do you want something that says, high end, or is it enough to have something that saves space and the food that’s in them?

The answer to those questions isn’t easy. There’s no question canisters can improve your décor and provides you with all-important storage space, but they need to be the right type of storage for your culinary style. Nearly all kitchen canisters are modulated in size, and some are labeled. Note that I do not personally recommend getting labeled canisters as this limits how you can utilize them. Instead, look for canisters that allow you to see what’s inside or ones that you can label yourself somehow. This allows you to change the contents according to your needs any time. For example, if coffee is very low it can go into a smaller container and sugar replace it after a washing.

The nice part about canisters is that unless you’re a vintage collector they’re not expensive compared to many other kitchen items. And the diversity of choices allows you to find a set that speaks volumes about you and your hearth. A word of warning, however, take into account the maintenance involved. If buying stainless steel consider a brushed style so finger prints don’t show, for example. Or if buying copper find a set that resists tarnishing. While it’s normal to clean out canisters once empty, you don’t want to have to be polishing them weekly.

Note to shoppers: you can save money by purchasing canisters in sets. This also creates a style continuity in your kitchen. Nonetheless, not all sets are perfect for all homes. If you know you’re not going to be able to effectively utilize even one piece in a set, you’re better off buying individually.
