Buying Pot and Pan Racks
Pan racks are a fabulous fix for kitchens short on storage space. Let’s face it, walls and ceilings are the most open regions of most kitchens. From a visual standpoint, having pots and pans on a rack saves the time of rooting through drawers or cupboards too – now you can see and get what you need quickly and easily, and they look nice too!

Before shopping for your pan rack, consider how much storage you need. It helps to gather all your pots into one place and clean out ones that are simply worn out or don’t use often enough to keep on hand. With those out of the way, next ask yourself what pans you use all the time. These are the pans you’ll want to put on the rack. Take a count by size and shape (also consider if there are any really hefty ones, or ones that may not be able to hang due to the handle).

Next question is do you want a wall rack, a ceiling rack or a freestanding rack? The last of these options helps if a lot of your pans don’t have handles suited for hanging, but it takes up floor space. Freestanding racks can also hold other kitchen items so if you have a bit of floor open, it might be the right solution.
A wall mounted rack or a ceiling rack requires studs, joists and/or beams for securing it – otherwise your rack will fall down. Use a stud finder to locate these if you don’t know where they are already. Note that some folks choose to place a pan rack in the dining room. This isn’t quite as convenient, but it’s a good option for less-used items or for when you’re really tight on kitchen space. Speaking of placement make sure that you’re not blocking walkways, that you won’t bash your head when cooking, and that the rack isn’t blocking a refrigerator or cabinet door. Also watch that it isn’t impeding any light source and that its far enough away from the stove to avoid grease.
A third consideration is how you want the pans to hang. Do you want them front facing so you can see what’s – what easily? Or is a sideways hang acceptable. Nearly any pan rack offers movable hooks, and the way your pan presents on that hook depends on where you place it. Note that front facing options won’t give you a much space, but they have a less cluttered feel.
Don’t forget that there are lots of finishes available. Chrome is nice but shows finger prints. Wood collects dust and oil readily. Copper can be beautiful if its treated to resist tarnish. There’s also iron, stainless steel, painted finishes and more! You want something that looks right in your kitchen but also functions effectively.
