Choosing Kitchen Timers

If you find yourself getting distracted while cooking, or you have a very busy home where food sometimes simmers to nothingness, then a kitchen timer is a necessity. Having one of these little items saves many a dish from disaster (and saves money, in turn, by not having to replace food).

Digital timers can cost between 25 and 50 USD

A good timer doesn’t need to be fancy – just functional. You want to be able to (a) hear the timer go off easily no matter where you are in the house, (b) easily readable numbers so you can see how much time is left even when flying by to do something else, and (c) be dependable.

Like many conveniences there are several varieties of timers from which to choose. Manual timers are nice in that you don’t have to worry about running out of battery. However, they may not always keep the best time. One example is the traditional egg timer, which usually has a secondary limitation of only running for up to 60 minutes maximum.
A more accurate option is digital timers.

You can program the time on these quickly and easily, and the LCD numbers are pretty easy to see. Within the realm of digital there are some nice options to consider. For example, can you mount the timer on your refrigerator as well as having it sit up visibly on the kitchen countertop? Is it small enough to put in your pocket and carry with you outside? Remember that ultimately your lifestyle determines what kind of timer is best for daily needs.
