Purchasing Table Linens
There are a wide variety of reasons you may be shopping for new table linens. Perhaps you’re getting married, moving into a new home, or perhaps your old linens have just seen better days. There’s no question that table linens will accent your home and give it the unique ambiance you most desire.
So how do you shop? While you can certainly get ideas about colors and patterns on the internet, you will want to be able to examine your linens in person before buying.

Workmanship makes all the difference in the world. Look at the seams and make sure those stitches are evenly space and nothing’s missing on each piece. Also feel the way the fabric lays. Does it seem smooth?
A bumpy table cloth makes it very hard to set a formal table. Cotton table clothes are among the most popular options because they provide smoothness and ease of cleaning. Cotton, like linen, is absorbent and strong. By comparison linen is lighter, but you can’t iron it directly (it easily burns). Linen doesn’t collect lint and won’t shrink like cotton can. So if you’re leaning toward cotton look for pre-shrunk fabric.
Cost wise cotton is usually less expensive than linen. Solids run about 40 for an oval between 70” and 90”. A third option is polyester, which is fully washable and durable. It costs less, sometimes half as much, as cotton. However, it’s important that you find stain resistant versions to avoid set in stains. This version of polyester is shiny and has somewhat of a reflective surface depending on the lighting in your room.

Table linens are far more than just tablecloths and napkins but are also things like tea cozies, purchased from the English Tea store
There are other little features you may wish to consider in your linens. For example, do you want embroidery on any of them (maybe monograms?). Do you want a couple of sets of linens suited for different seasons or special events in your home? Many people have a bright set for spring, and rich, bold colors for fall. Even if you don’t get a variety two full sets of linens is recommended for any home so that you always have a set when one is in the wash. It’s also recommended that you buy a table liner with your cloth. This goes under your table cloth and protects the wood from heat. They also help your table cloth lay more neatly on the table
