Scratching Posts for Cats

Providing a scratching post for your cat is a super way to assure good health for the cat and for your furniture and sanity.

Cats who use a good scratching post will use that to scrape and condition their claws, rather than the door sill, furniture or basket, particularly if you introduce it to them early on in their inside life.
Scratching posts come in a wide array of types and styles, but there are a few things that every cat will enjoy and will use more often if you assure that your scratching post has those options.

The biggest factor in determining if the cat will use it, will be what its made of.
If you’re problem is a cat who claws at furniture or carpeting, then you want to particularly avoid purchasing one that is made of carpet fibers and move instead to a hemp or sisal fiber, which in my experience cats seem to like more and use more frequently.
Scratching posts can also be made of cardboard or wood, but they don’t seem to hold up as well as those which are wood, or plastic and are wrapped with the hemp rope, nor to be used as frequently.

Even the cat who had in the past scratched on the furniture seemed to take well to the sisal posts and to use those as a substitute for the furniture I couldn’t seem to keep them away from.
The size of the scratching post is also going to be a factor.
The post should be long, or tall enough if it stands, that the cat can stretch his or her entire body length up along the post, which might be an issue if you’re blessed with a small home or limited space.

Some posts will slide over the doorknob, however I prefer those made of board, which have a loop to attach them to the leg of a chair or table, or one that stands on a base and is tall enough to let the cat stretch their body up.
In every case, the post and base should be sturdy and stable enough that it won’t fall over while the cat is using it.
Make certain you find a heavy post with a broad base area.
