Simple Training for Your Cat

Ask anyone and they will tell you that cats are not trainable.
What a load of ridiculous and untrue trivia.
Cats aren’t born using a litter box so apparently they can be trained.. and not only can they.. they should be.
Having worked with cats for many years, I find them to be as trainable as any other animal and certainly easier to work with than many of the humans I know.
Cats are not born on the counter either and they will learn to get there, or on the sofa or anywhere else that you don’t want them.
In the same way they leared to get up, they can be trained to get down.

The cats I own will respond to being told to get down, and will in fact, get down from what they’ve climbed up.]They were consistently told, DOWN, using a one word command, and then lifted to the ground from whereever they were.
In this way, they learn to associate that one word command with  the floor. As they are placed on the floor, in the beginning I give them a treat, so that they also associate  getting down, or obeying the command, with getting something pleasant.

You can teach your cat in the same way that you teach a puppy, using single simple commands, and concentrating on one command until they have that one before moving to a second one.
You must be consistent in the teaching so that the cat isn’t confused.
If he is allowed on something one day and not the next, he’s not quite sure how to react and rightly so.
IF your rules at work changed on a daily basis, it doesn’t make for a pleasant work place.

Teaching your cat the word No. means that he will stop what he’s doing, whether that something is climbing the drapes or biting and scratching at your hand in play in a way that isn’t comfortable to you.
In the same way, train your cat to get along with other animals in the house and outside of it.
I have cats who will play with my sisters rabbit, who nurse from the dog and who enjoy a game of chase the ball, or wrestle in a nice way  with the new puppy. They didn’t always, but they learned the behavior.

These cats love to ride.

It doesn’t require vast outlay of time or effort to accomplish some rudimentary training for your cat, nor does it in fact fail to work even if you have multiple cats living in the same household so long as you keep the rules the same for each of them.

You don’t have to be a master with animals, or a professional trainer, nor in fact do you need to use punishment type methods such as the spray bottle in most cases to accomplish it.
You need to be firm in your voice, willing to get up and remove them and to actively take part in the animals behavior.

A spray bottle, while it may get them off the furniture, teaches them absolutely nothing except that getting on the furniture gets them wet..  and cats, being cats, will get on the furniture when you’re not looking

Simple tips:
Use one word commands. Don’t try using whole sentences
Use the same command consistently for a week or more, while setting the cat on the ground and offering a treat.
SHOW him the things you want from him. When you say DOWN,. set him down.

A bored cat is a cat who is ready to play

when attempting to teach the “come” command, if he does not appear, go to him and offer him a treat, bring him back to your original position,. so that it becomes clear that you want him, where you are and if he comes to you, something positive and pleasant, such as a cuddle or a treat takes place.

Never hit a  cat, particularly in the face. If you do so accidentally, as  I have done with a broom when not noticing, stop what you’re doing and spend some time calming the cat and holding him.
