Buying a Table Saw
Purchasing a table saw will be one of the biggest investments in your woodworking tools inventory.
They are not inexpensive and as such should be carefully considered, you should know what options you are going to need, and whats important to look for in any table say.
The design, quality and reason for each table saw will vary as much as the the many models, all table saws have certain basic parts and features, such as a base, a table, extension wings, a rip fence, and a motor.

The base will house the part of the saw that actually operates, such as the arbor assembly, the gears and at times even the
motor. Many saws use the base as a cabinet of sorts, meaning that the base will be extended all the way to the floor. Others will have an open base, which means it is an open metal box, primarily just legs.
In my particular viewpoint, the closed base is best, particulary for safety reasons, however its a matter mostly of personal preference.
One of the most important parts of the saw in terms of its performance will be the table. It should be flat, and quite durable and sturdy to support the wood you are cutting. The materials that work best are steel or cast iron for both the table and the extensions.
If the saw you are considering is a quality type table saw, the table will be made using foundry methods and will be precision ground.
For your extensions, select a heavy duty saw, which will offer cast iron extensions rather than the thinner stamped steel or the lighter varity of webbed type cast iron.

The rip fencing guides the wood as it is being cut long wise, and can be positioned to any width to be cut. The fence will ride on those rails. Select a saw also based on the quality and the accuracy of the fencing system as it too is an important consideration.
Most table saws use a miter gauge and this helps to permit crosscutting.
This should be made of a cast metal, rather than hard plastic or aluminum. Even the no frills variety of protractor type guage can do well if its durable.
