Many Household pets aren’t certain about getting their nails trimmed, especially when its a new procedure and they’ve not become accustomed to it yet.l
The animal which lives indoors full time needs to have his or her nails trimmed, and it should take place about every two weeks, more often if they grow rapidly.

Both dogs and cats can have their nails trimmed using approximately the same equipment.
Start them  younger so that they become accustomed to having it done and this will help then to become accustomed to it, and cause that they don’t give you any more problem with having the job done than you really want.
In cats its the perfect solution to keep them from clawing furniture and also makes it unnecessary to have that most inhumane declawing done that most vets and animal allies find so deplorable.

With a cat, its far easier to accomplish for the first time if you wrap them firmly in a towel, and leave the four paws outside the towel.
I then hold them firmly in my lap, making sure that I have the paw pressed lightly to extend the nail.
Then using the scissor type pet trimmers, trim the nails rapidly.
A small tip, for the cats, don’t let the nail trimmer snap any more than it needs to as this is startling to them.
check to be certain that you haven’t cut too closely and if you have, trim less the next time. Try working in smaller lengths removed and doing it more than one time.
This helps to be certain they don’t end up with sore feet and you with scratches.
If you have cut too closely, apply styptic to the nails and do not file.
When the job has been accomplished, give the cat a treat, regardless of his behavior so that he associates the nail cutting with something positive.

Many dogs will lay in your arms or on your lap and let you cut their nails with minimal issues. My own dogs, being somewhat larger, I hold between my knees, with their head facing front and hold the paw in my hand. While holding the dog so that they arent’ startled by the clip sound, I hold them firmly and clip all of them, double checking when I’ve finished to be certain that they aren’t cut too short or left too long.
Most dogs and cats have nails that are lighter in color, so that you can see where the actual “wuick” that is to say.. the nail bed begins.
For those who have darker nails, which doesn’t allow you to see that quick,  clip a bare eighth of an inch at a time to prevent nail damage.
