Hedge Trimmers
There are several separate things to consider when buying a hedge trimmer. First is the length of the blade. If you’re doing only light trimming you’ll only need about 16”. The nice thing about this size is that it’s much lighter and typically has a better balance (which, in turn, decreases arm stress). If you’ve got a lot of trimming and large bushes, look to a 20” blade to insure that you get an even surface and that you have enough reach with the blade to get those hard to trim spots.

Next, check out the “cut” capacity. The average blade cuts about 3/8”, which is only sufficient for younger hedges. The larger capacity blades (3/4”) are better suited to older bushes and heavier greenery. While you’re reviewing this size, look to see if the trimmer you’re considering has dual action. Overall you’ll be happier with a dual action blade because it’s much easier on the arms and gives the hedges a neater appearance.
You also have options when it comes to power source, but the most popular hedge trimmers on the market today are electric. These aren’t as noisy as the gas driven variety and aren’t as hefty either. Just make sure you get one that has enough amperage for the task at hand. The heavier your foliage, the higher amperage you’ll need. Additionally, try to get an electrical system that offers a rechargeable battery so that you don’t have to run electrical cords all over the yard.
Beyond these basics, having a good locking system for safety is essential, and remember to consider the cost of on-going maintenance in the original cost of your system. Gas operated systems are pretty easy to keep up, but they are heavier and less balanced. Note too that with gas prices going up, this may not be an economical option due to fuel.
Last but not least is warranty. The average on the market is one year vs. manufacturing defect. If you do not take care of your trimmer properly this warranty won’t help – so make sure your new tool gets properly stored and oiled according to the manufacturer’s instructions to protect that warranty.
